If you run a warehouse, distribution center, or machine shop in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, or anywhere in Middle Tennessee, you have probably tried to run a standard office WiFi install on the production floor and watched it fail within a month. Access points that work fine in a front office drop connections next to a CNC mill, a rack of steel shelving, or a loading dock door. The problem is not the WiFi brand. It is that warehouse and shop-floor environments are a different engineering problem than an office, and most installers treat them the same.<\/p>\n

Why Office WiFi Doesn’t Survive the Shop Floor<\/h2>\n

A typical office install assumes drywall, carpet, and people sitting at desks. A warehouse or production floor has metal racking, tilt-up concrete walls, overhead cranes, forklifts, and machinery throwing off electrical noise. Every one of those things reflects, blocks, or interferes with a WiFi signal in a way an office never does. Add high ceilings and long, narrow aisles and you get dead zones that no amount of turning the router off and on will fix.<\/p>\n

Metal shelving in particular acts like a mirror for radio signals. An access point mounted 40 feet from a pallet rack aisle can look perfect on paper and still leave the far end of that aisle with no usable signal, because the signal is bouncing instead of reaching the device.<\/p>\n

Coverage for Scanners, Forklifts, and Floor Devices<\/h2>\n

Most warehouses depend on handheld scanners, forklift-mounted tablets, and increasingly a growing list of IoT sensors on tanks, conveyors, and machines. Those devices move constantly and need a wireless network that hands them off from one access point to the next without dropping the connection mid-scan. That requires access points placed and configured for roaming, not just for raw coverage, plus enough of them to avoid the gaps that metal racking and machinery create. A site survey that walks the actual floor, not a floor plan on a screen, is the only way to know where those gaps are before you pay for the install.<\/p>\n

Keeping Shop-Floor Traffic Separate From the Office<\/h2>\n

Once you have coverage, the next problem is traffic. A production floor running PLCs, CNC controllers, robotic cells, or barcode scanners should not be sharing a flat network with the front office computers and guest WiFi. If one gets compromised or simply gets congested, it can take the other down with it. The fix is VLANs: separate, isolated network segments for the shop floor, the office, guest access, and cameras, all running over the same physical UniFi hardware but kept apart from each other in software. Done right, a visitor on guest WiFi has no path to a machine controller, and a slow firmware update on an office laptop does not stutter a scanner mid-pick.<\/p>\n

This is the part most network installers in Middle Tennessee cannot offer: most of them have never been inside a control panel or programmed a PLC. Black Pearl Automation does both.
